Standards of Professionalism Policy

The Professional Theatre Council encourages the continued growth of excellent professional theatre in St. Louis by providing a Standards of Professionalism Policy.

The policy can be activated only by the judges, and culminated only by the Board of Directors. The judges will be instructed not to activate the policy unless absolutely necessary to protect the professional reputation of PTC, the Kevin Kline Awards, and the constituent theatres.

The policy will be activated only under the following conditions:

  • 3 different judges…
  • within any 12 month period…
  • contact PTC with concerns over Standards of Professionalism.

Should such conditions be met, the following steps will take place:

  1. The judges concerned will fill out a Standards form, identifying specifically where they believe the company in question is falling short of the necessary threshold of professionalism.
  2. The judging committee will combine all the Standards forms into one Standards report, which will be sent to the AD of the company in question. The AD will be invited to respond to the concerns raised.
  3. The judging committee will collect and evaluate both the judges’ concerns and the AD’s response, ultimately coming up with a recommendation that they will take to the Board of Directors.
  4. The Board of Directors will vote on whether or not to dismiss the company in question from participation in PTC.
  5. If the BOD votes to retain the company in question, the policy’s 12 month period will reset, and the company will continue to be judged for the Kevin Kline Awards.
  6. If the BOD votes to dismiss the company, any shows already judged will still be eligible, but the company will no longer be judged or included in ads, etc.
  7. After 12 months have passed, the company in question may reapply for participation in PTC. The company may select any show, inform PTC of the dates, and provide three comp tickets. The judging committee will send a panel of three anonymous committee members and/or judges to view the production. This panel will complete Standards forms and make a recommendation to the committee, which will then make a recommendation to the BOD.
  8. If the BOD votes yes, the company will immediately rejoin PTC. If the BOD votes no, the company must wait another 12 months before reapplying.
