Theatre History/Description: The Muny was established in 1919, and The Muny has been in continuous operation since that summer. Situated in a grand natural amphitheater, the stage is framed by a proscenium of trees, and boasts the world’s largest outdoor turntable.
Through the years, The Muny has offered grand operas, operettas, dance troupes, rock concerts and Broadway-style musicals. Today, seven “Muny-sized” musicals from the best of Broadway attracts hundreds of thousands of St. Louisans and visitors every summer.
2012 will mark The Muny’s 93rd season in historic Forest Park, and while the technical advances since the first days are astonishing, much of what has made the theatre a living St. Louis tradition remains unchanged. The Muny produces all of its shows, hiring all directors, choreographers, designers and performers. A full orchestra adds a thrilling dimension to every show, and enhances the experience of live musical theatre, at its best, under the stars!
